RCD testing is the process of safely & ’tripping’ your residual current devices to ensure that it operates quickly should there be an electrical incident. This can also be referred to as safety switch testing. Your RCD is designed to switch off all the power to that circuit. The quicker a RCD trips, the smaller the electrical shock sustained by an individual. Push button testing of your RCD is additionally required under Australian Standards on a 6 monthly basis. this may be completed by one of our qualified electricians.

RCD and fault finding questions

  • A residual current device, also called a safety switch, trips and turns off the power when it detects current leaking. It helps protect you from faulty appliances, water in electrical fittings and rodent damage to cables.

  • Press the test button. If the switch trips, it is working, so reset it afterwards. The Queensland Electrical Safety Office recommends doing this every three months. If it does not trip, call a licensed electrician to check or replace it.

  • The button only checks that the switch operates. An electrician uses a tester to check that the RCD trips quickly enough and at the right level, so you know it will protect you when it counts.

  • Common causes are a faulty appliance, water in an electrical fitting or rodent damage to cables. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset the switch, then plug items back in one at a time. If it still trips, call us and we will find the fault.

  • Tracing why a circuit, light, fan or piece of equipment is not working or keeps tripping. We handle everything from a tripping power circuit or a failed ceiling fan to automated plant with VSD and PLC controls.

  • Queensland's electrical safety rules require the power points in homes that are sold or leased to be protected by an approved safety switch, and an electrician working on a home must make sure that protection is there or include fitting it. Even if you are not selling or renting, a safety switch is a simple way to reduce the risk of electric shock.
